prayer for Christchurch: prayer in disaster

There was a prayer service at Uniting College today in response to the recent Christchurch earthquake. Here’s the table, set with candle, cross, koru as symbol of hope, Bible open at a comfort passage from Isaiah. We opened with silence, then listened to Scripture (Isaiah 49:14-16, the lectionary reading from last week). We sung to the Taize chant Lord Hear Our Prayer, had space for individual prayer and then said the Lords Prayer together. The words “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done” were hard to say.

But it was so helpful to sit with colleagues, to pray with colleagues, organised by colleagues, for my home town.

  4. Thanks so much Steve, prayer really matters.

Yesterday a man handed me a bottle of drinkable water and I had to hurry away so he would not see me cry. What is my life reduced to. A bottle of water and a touch of kindness and I become messy!

Yes, prayer matters, God counts as Someone special!
