Today is 1 May, the launch of New Zealand music month. Some of the church staff came dressed appropriately.

So; who’s your favourite New Zealand musician/band?

  4. On Good Friday I saw an excellent documentary on New Zealand concert pianist
    Michael Houston

Someone who is such a excellent techinical performer, he can spend all his time thinking about the expressing the emotion/story of the piece.

    I was sold!

  7. Dave Dobbyn for me, with Neil Finn a very close second. But Fat Freddy’s drop has appeal simply because I sense it will be the sound that future historians label as the most distinctly Aotearoa sound even though it has hints of music from other places.

  9. …. Can’t forget the ‘ herbs ‘ mates – http://store.nzmusic.com/mp3/51684.mp3

    Anyone remember ‘ the mockers ‘ ? – http://store.nzmusic.com/mp3/126322.mp3

Ahh the memories they conjure up, cruisin around the square with my mates in the early 80’s, listening to this music.

  10. Ahh, if we’re going early 80’s it’s Luke Hurley busking in Dunedin with Japanese Girl; listening to the Bats at the Christchurch band rotunda by the avon, trying to get into the Chill.

  11. Interesting post from a UK perspective – apart from work by the Finns and offshoot bands little is know here about NZ bands. However Kiwi musicians were very present in the London music scene of the 80s and 90s. I rememberPaul Kendra who hailed from Helensville near Auckland was a great session bass player, and brother and sister Carrie and Mark Simpson from Wellington were also prominent session vocalists – but only Split Enz and Crowded House have made into the mainstream in a minor way with an obvious Kiwi identity. Guess it is something to do with management deals and the ability or otherwise to tour here but then Aussie musicians and bands have made it? Bit puzzling really?

Its good to read of the Church participating in a music month

  12. Current favourites: Eight, Pheonix foundation and art-rock Split Enz. Unfortunately they’ve all finished up.

My most listened to music also includes Gramsci, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Crowded House (Kiwi or Aussie? Let’s not fight) and Dave Dobbyn.
