Lynne, I concur with your post, and the potential issues that establishing Matariki as a national holiday might raise. You asked some good questions. Like you I hadn’t heard of it until a recent road trip with a friend who has named their farm “Matariki” - it’s significance was explained, and I followed that conversation up by buying Libby Hakaraia’s new book, an introduction to Matariki, titled: Matariki - The Maori New Year.

Personally I’d like to sharpen my thinking around replacing Queens Birthday (for example) with Matariki - the birth of a New Year and to work out the implications of it being a constellation that aided navigation - How do we as, firstly a bi-cultural nation, navigate our way into a new or growing sense of identity, shared values and purpose as Aotearoa New Zealand…a unique nation amongst the nations of God’s world…

Thanks, Paul
I like the ancient/current navigational link.
Means journey is a given too.
we haven’t made it, but we’re in a journey towards some sort of true community/coexistance/cooperation
I like that.

What happened to the original posting about Matariki? I left a comment there yesterday but now it has disappeared (along with your posting).

Hmm, anything weird in the Movable Type activity log? My comments spam picked up markedly in the last week or so.

checked the log - both lynne and i have had posts that appeared - people commented (you), and then they disappear and their is not even a trace of them in the activity log.
