needing visual help

the new church i pastor has …
a) a paid staff team of 5
b) a board who provide accountability
c) a range of ministry leaders.

the new church i pastor has a signboard with …
a) photos of the staff team at the top
b) photos of the board in the middle
c) photos of the ministry leaders below

the new church i pastor needs a signboard that shows …
how the staff team, in accountable relationship with the board,
and in team with a range of ministry leaders and pastoral interns
sustain the ministry of everyone in the church in the world.

how do i visually re-present this, using photos, on a signboard?

  1. did you do set theory at school? I’m wondering whether a Venn diagram might do it without looking hierarchical…

  2. You don’t.

Just ask everyone to bring a picture of themselves, cut out the backgrounds, and stick them higgeldy-piggeldy onto the board.

(leave the org chart for the annual report)

  3. Lose the photos and live it instead.

  4. I think you should put a big smiley photo (taken in lovely bright sunshine) of each person on the board, in no particular order, with a bit of personal info about who they are and a bit of ‘official’ info about what they do. I think maybe people want to KNOW the ministry team, more than they want to know how they are organised and who answers to who.

  5. instead of the photos, get some of the church kids to draw portraits of you all and stick them up instead[i’m sure that shannon and kayli would be up for this…!]

as well as the leaders of the church, stick up some pics of as many other members as you can fit…

display them in alphabetical order, rather than the hierarchy of top, middle, bottom…

as well as [or instead of?] the signboard, stick the photos and pictures onto large wooden building blocks and let folk build with them [might be interesting to see where they put you!] on the blank faces of the blox you couls put bits of info [name, role in church, likes/dislikes…]

instead of the board, peg the mugshots up on a washing line and rearrange them before each service…

as well as the board, have a random ‘church member of the week’ frame up on display and stick a pic of a different church member up there every week. give it pride of place above the signboard…

arrange the mugshots in a circle and rotate it each week…

  6. What about building a collage as a team building activity? Ask everyone to talk about how they fit together and then have them build the collage out of that discussion.

Alternatively, put the pictures in a horizontal row.

  7. hmmm – I sense ‘purpose of board’ is the key question here – if it is identify people then the order and form is not that crucial – but if it is to identify an organisational structure (sounds partially to be that) then we need to recognise that this does exist (and isn’t bad)

  8. we have been discussing grace as a network of relationships and tring to map it. have a look at the idagrams at steve’s smallritual site at http://www.btinternet.com/~smallritual/network2.html for an idea. in fact e-mail steve this idea – it’s the sort of thing he’d be brilliant at!

  9. i should be working, but this is more interesting to think about…
how about changing the thing every month and giving different groups/individuals in the church the responsibility for re-styling the board each time…

make a random ‘quilt’ of pics of photos of as many church members as possible, with names written beneath. list the board/staff team members to the side and turn the thing into a kind of ‘where’s wally/waldo’ experience [find the leader]…

cover the signboard with photos taken at church events. label the board/staff team etc as and where they appear in the pics…
